Is it really the third weekend of 2014 already? How did that happen? That also means that it’s Martin Luther King Jr. weekend![i] A long one, yay! So, how are H and I going to spend our extra-long weekend?
Well, it started with a bang last night! The University of Minnesota is hosting the Hockey City Classic this year, and last night, the women’s and men’s hockey teams played outside under the lights. I’m not even kidding! The University flooded TCF Bank Stadium.[ii]
As part of our Christmas gifts to our dads, H and I each gave them a ticket to these outdoor hockey games. My dad has been so excited – he called me on Monday wanting to know what the final plan was already. It’s cute. He’s a college sports fan to his core, and I love that about him. I was privileged enough to be able to buy these tickets during the presale – there are some good things that come with working for a University! So we’ve been planning for this game for months, and it’s finally here!
So, that’s Friday night’s plan.[iii] H’s dad is hanging out with us for a bit on Saturday before heading back home sometime in the afternoon or evening. And Saturday night, I am going to be having a long-awaited movie night with K. We tried to get together before Catching Fire was released, but it didn’t work out – H ended up having to go out west for work, and my schedule was pretty crazy. And this will be a nice break for her, because she’s been studying like crazy for one of her actuarial exams, which is coming up in a couple of weeks.[iv] So! Movie night on Saturday night for me.
As for Sunday and Monday? Who knows! This is the first weekend we’ve been able to say that since before the holidays. We talked about possibly going on a snowmobile adventure at the cabin again, but that would require driving to the cabin. Or we’ll stay home and do nothing, which sounds pretty wonderful to me. In any case, it’s going to be a nice combination of fun and exciting and relaxing. And I’m ready for it.
Happy long weekend!
“A baby born in the ghetto. A baby born with a silver spoon. One tells his mama, ‘I have a dream.’ One tells his mama, ‘I’ll walk the moon.’ From the beginning, we’re all looking for a happy ending. Every dream of winning, every love we’ve been in. Right from the beginning, we’re all looking for a happy ending.” —Sugarland, “Happy Ending”
[i] I’m not sure how we, as a nation, began honoring famous people with long weekends, but I think it’s the greatest honor that could be given. Here’s to you, Dr. King. I can’t wait to see your new memorial in DC next time I’m there.
[ii] For those of you who don’t follow college football, that’s where the Gophers play. I happen to work on campus – I don’t follow it either.
[iii] As I’m writing this, the games haven’t happened yet. Check my Twitter if you want to know how they went!
[iv] She’s a smarty pants when it comes to math. I hope you’re reading this, K! I love you!
