All right, I’m the first to admit that this video is weird and doesn’t make a lot of sense. But the girl has pipes, and the song is catchy. So, therefore, I am forging past the weirdness of the video itself and focusing on the song.
While I love Ariana Grande’s voice, I was a little disappointed in her first album – there weren’t any running songs, which is always a bummer, but there also weren’t any first-dance-potential songs. They were all in-between, showcasing her beautiful voice, but not taking any risks. I love that her first two singles from her second album are more fun – this song, and then “Problem” with Iggy Azalea. They’re both on my running playlist, that’s for sure. So I’m thinking I’m going to like her second album a little better.
So, on to the song. Her powerful voice paired with Zedd’s deejay wonderfulness is really fun to listen to. Here’s the chorus:
This is the part where I say I don’t want you
I’m stronger than I’ve been before
This is the part where I break free
Because I can’t resist it no more
It’s a girl’s song, a powerful way of making a point that she doesn’t need a man. Not only that, but she doesn’t want him either. It’s a very strong message, and I love that she’s portraying that for herself, since she’s a young girl, still. I think that’s part of why the video irritates me. In the video, she’s shedding clothes, as if they’re the oppressors. I don’t like that. But that’s a completely different topic.
Anyway, long story short, this is a cool song to run to. Girl power, and stuff!
