“All About That Bass” by Meghan Trainor

Not very long ago, I was with my mother when I heard this song on the radio for the first time.  She told me that she thought it was a ridiculous song, and I readily agreed.  Until one day last week, when I was stuck in traffic and it came on the radio.  I almost changed the station – what is this “all about the bass” crap? – but I was focused on changing lanes or something, and I let it play.  That’s when I discovered what a clever song it is.  That’s when I fell in love with Meghan Trainor.

I did a little research, and it turns out she is mostly a songwriter – she has writing credits with a bunch of bands and artists across genres, which is pretty cool.  She doesn’t even have an album out yet (I feel a little hipster, since I’m jumping on this bandwagon pretty early), but her EP is brilliant and funny.  I love when music is funny.

Okay, here’s the spiel on this song (this is mostly for you, Mom):

Yes, the chorus just repeats, “because you know I’m all about that bass, ‘bout that bass, no treble.”  This, in itself, is clever, because if you don’t know a ton about music, it might not click right away that she’s making a reference to sheet music.  Still, it’s a little bit strange for a chorus, right?

No, it’s AWESOME.

This is the bridge:

My mama, she told me, “don’t worry about your size”

She said, “Boys like a little more booty to hold at night”

You know I won’t be no stick figure silicone Barbie doll

So if that’s what you’re into, then go ahead and move along

Why is this awesome?  Because, as you listen to the words, you realize that her references to “bass” refer to her butt.  And she’s saying that she is never going to be a skinny girl, but she doesn’t care.  Because she’s all about that bass, you see?

I just love it.

Another favorite:

I’m bringing booty back

Go ahead and tell them skinny bitches that

No, I’m just playing, I know you think you’re fat

But I’m here to tell ya

Every inch of you is perfect from the bottom to the top

This is what girls should be hearing.  This is what they should be listening to.  Because this is the proper message to be sharing with impressionable and insecure young women:  every inch of you is perfect from the bottom to the top.

Because that’s what’s true.
